Can Forged Brass Work in Aggressive Fluids?

Not all ball valves belong everywhere. Forged brass occupies a sweet spot: higher performance than plastic, more cost-effective than stainless steel. But which applications truly demand forging? Let’s map the territory.

Fluid Compatibility:

Excellent: Water (hot/cold), oils (mineral, synthetic), air, natural gas, LPG, diesel, hydraulic fluids (petroleum-based)

Limited: Deionized water (dezincification risk above 60°C – use dezincification-resistant brass), seawater (use bronze instead)

Avoid: Strong acids (pH<4), strong bases (pH>10), chlorinated hydrocarbons

Technical Application Parameters:

Size range: 1/4″ to 4″ (forged construction typical up to 2″)

Full port Cv values: 1/2″ – Cv 12. 3/4″ – Cv 20. 1″ – Cv 35

Leakage rate: <0.01% of rated Cv for soft seats

Fire-safe design available (metal seats for 500°C+)

Industry Use Cases:

  1. HVAC Systems (Commercial Buildings)

Chilled water lines at 6°C and condenser water at 35°C

Brass Forged Ball Valve resist thermal cycling fatigue. After 20.000 cycles from 5°C to 60°C, leakage remains zero.

Parameter: Max differential pressure 16 bar for balancing valves.

  1. Compressed Air Networks (Factories)

Oil-free and lubricated air up to 10 bar

Forged brass doesn’t corrode from moisture. Cast brass might develop red rot (selective zinc corrosion).

Parameter: 1″ forged valve at 8 bar flows 800 L/min with 0.1 bar drop.

  1. Natural Gas Metering (Residential & Commercial)

Gas pressure typically 2–5 bar, occasionally 20 bar at distribution points

Forging ensures zero porosity – critical for gas safety. One pinhole leak could be disastrous.

Parameter: Maximum operating pressure for gas: 20 bar with ISO 7-1 threads.

  1. Marine Sanitation Systems (Boats)

Saltwater toilet flush lines. Forged brass handles intermittent salt exposure better than cast due to fewer crevices.

Caution: Must be flushed with fresh water after each use. Otherwise use DZR brass.

When to Move to Stainless Steel:

If fluid temperature exceeds 150°C, or if you have 10%+ salt spray continuously, upgrade to CF8M stainless. For everything else, forged brass delivers the best total value.
