poe1 3.29.1 Updates Explained | u4gm

PoE1 3.29.1 is the kind of patch that punishes autopilot. You can copy an older build, spend your POE currency, and still end up with a setup built around outdated socket rules, the wrong reward source, or a Voyage route that doesn't suit your character. The useful question isn't "What is strongest?" It's "Which current systems actually support my goal?"

The Patch Changed Your Planning, Not Just Your Loot

Curse of the Allflame ties Charts, Allflame Lanterns, Voyages, Ducats, and Dead Man's Sulphur into one planning loop. A Chart has value as a standalone area, but it also acts as a piece of a later Voyage, so layout, border properties, reward categories, and monster difficulty all matter. A high reward number isn't automatically good if the route slows your mapper or pushes your defenses past their limit.

Version 3.29.1 added the Eldritch Depths Chart variant, Ukatoa's Ducat, Sunken Opulence chests, and Sunken Gems chests. It also expanded Allflame crafting to Ancient Orbs and Orbs of Chance, allowed Dredged currency on Strongboxes and Essences, and reduced the gold cost for market Charts. Before launching a long Voyage, check your Sulphur reserve, decide which Dredged resources deserve saving, and confirm that the reward type matches your current upgrade plan.

Build Decisions That Survive the Socket Rework

Socket colors are now an optimization layer rather than a hard gate. Gems can enter any equipment socket, while a matching red, green, or blue socket grants 10% quality to its matching gem. White sockets remain the default, and higher item level improves the chance of non-white sockets; Chromatic Orbs force one non-white socket while the others roll normally.

Choose the base and modifier package before worrying about colors.
Install the required gems first, even when colors do not match.
Give matching colors to gems that gain the most from added quality.
Only spend extra resources when the quality increase changes real DPS, defense, or uptime.

That last step saves more resources than it sounds. An older guide may spend heavily to reproduce a perfect color pattern, even though the actual skill setup works immediately on white sockets. From what I've seen, players often fixate on visual perfection while leaving weak flasks, missing resistances, or poor links untouched.

Mercenaries and Abyss Need Different Tests

Mercenaries can appear from Act 3, while the Scion's Luminary Ascendancy can permanently hire up to three, keep two in reserve, and field one ally. Judge an ally by skill behavior, range, support links, equipment needs, defensive uptime, and positioning-not just the displayed damage number. A lower-DPS companion that stays alive and keeps attacking can outperform a fragile burst option during a long map.

System Best Question Common Mistake
Voyage Does this Chart improve the whole route? Chasing one large reward value
Allflame crafting Which result makes the item usable now? Starting without a defined item role
Mercenary Can the ally maintain useful uptime? Comparing only sheet DPS
Abyss Are exclusive drops worth the time? Ignoring map speed and chest quality
My Research Checklist for Endgame Updates

Abyss now opens its pits and connecting paths from the start, then concentrates rewards around defeated enemies, chests, Abyssal Jewels, Stygian Vises, and Depths bosses. The follow-up patch shortened Lich encounters, added a crystal-beam arena element, provided three reward chests after a Depths boss, and improved chest quantity and quality, especially for currency and Scarabs. For self-found characters, that item access may matter more than direct profit; trade-focused players should compare demand for jewels, belts, Bloodline access, and pinnacle drops.

Use the current wiki as a decision map, not a pile of isolated definitions. Check the version history, separate an item's source from its function, follow linked gems and supports, and label each claim as either a rule or a strategy. When researching with cheap Path of exile currency, don't let a low purchase price decide the build by itself; compare the item against your resistances, recovery, links, and actual content speed. I could be wrong but, in 3.29.1, the best upgrade is often the one that removes a bottleneck rather than the one with the flashiest tooltip.
