Peguis First Nation singer-songwriter William Prince will take the stage in Toronto next month to kick off the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening ceremonies alongside other Canadian and international music stars.
"It’s such a joy and privilege to represent my home community of the Peguis First Nation and Canada on the world’s biggest stage for the FIFA World Cup," Prince wrote in a social media post on Saturday, calling playing the event a "surreal honour."
He confirmed the news with CBC Manitoba on Saturday.
The folk-country star said each FIFA opening ceremony — also happening in Mexico City and Los Angeles — will reflect the "unique spirit and energy" of its host nation as the tournament takes over cities across North America.
Toronto's opening ceremony on June 12 will include performances by Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Elyanna, Jessie Reyez, Michael Bublé, Nora Fatehi, Sanjoy, Vegedream and William Prince, according to FIFA's website.
The opening ceremony in Mexico Cityon June 11 will feature Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná and Tyla. The Los Angeles ceremony on June 12 will see Katy Perry, Future, Anitta, LISA, Rema and Tyla perform.
